Have looked for answer, and apologise if its been covered. I have in the last couple of months cancelled our cable and telephone subscription. Wanted to get son a eurovox 5100 for xmas, we still have a live cable from what i can ascertain, as my son does not get a reception in his room unless using the old virgin box and aeriel, but he does not have any channels apart from 1-5. Will this work, don't want to waste my money. Thanks in advance.

it will work if your cable feed is live

It should work of course but you won't know till you try, whether its worth bothering with really is another question as slowly but surely Virgin are shuting down all this type of box via Nagra 3 ...chances are that all boxes will be defunct by Easter .....

I would say that to avoid having your son disappointed when the box is closed out, due to N3, you do not go down this road. After N3 comes to your area all he will be left with will be what you can get on your TV with an aerial. You will just be throwing your money away as the box will be just about useless in a very short time. It is up to you if you want your son to have all these channels for a very short time and then nothing, I can just imagine the trouble you will land in when he looks for them back and for peace of mind you have to fork out for a subscription to VM, not to mention the money you will have wasted buying the box in the first place.
Regards Wez
