Default broken laptop

my brother has my old laptop.
17 inch HP.
he had it in the back of his van. cut along story short. someone or something had put so much weight on it. that the head of the mains lead snapped off ( the bit that goes into the computer)
now he gets like a blackish screen on boot.
connect to a plasma he see's it boot up but get errors on win, then it goes funny with display error. the lappy is dual booted with linux and that will not display at all.
what sought of damage may of been done?
i know it is HW damage but anyone give me a clue what it might be.
possibly the inverter? idk

if it was only the inverter it would display ok on the tv/external, sounds like it could be a crack in the main board.

If the mainboard is gone, it will cost you a bomb to get replaced..... probably more than a new laptop!
