Yep - been a big tussle between blu-ray and HD DVD - seems like we're facing another VHS vs Betamax when video first came out. Which is going to really hurt consumer interest until we get a standard format.
I think I've seen mention of hybrid players that will work with both blu-ray and HD DVD discs - I can only hope they are coming, and not too pricey. |

Not sure - but they're going to make the Playstation 3 compatible with it, so that's really going to push Blu-ray market-wise.

Yes blu-ray is supposed the new thing even though they cannot get it to work very well. That is what is holding up the PS3 so far is there want to include blue-ray. There is also a Toshiba format that is incompatible so it looks like if your old enough a beta and vhs war again soon. So far I do not think they have a player that can do both yet but hey the consumer will decide who wins.

Another good thing to mention that the capacity is 54Gigs due to 2 layers, which means 26 Gigs per layer. Other medium such as the DVD has a maximum number of layers, but as far as research found it, Blu-ray does not. I believe I saw an article, where a 7-layer disc was made possible

Sony announced today that they will release the first notebook with optical Blu Ray disk drive due out in Japan in June. $3,600 retail. Sony will also sell a Blu-ray equipped desktop PC with display for about the same price.

This is one of their point which is hard to grasp for everyone. The PS3's retail price has been announced at E3, with packages of $500 and $600, which does indeed sound insane, but technically, it is "cheap" for the Bluray alone...

TDK is actually working on a 200 GB blu ray disc right now! i presume its gonna be a dual sided quad-layered disc ( as each layer has 25GB)
and also all ps3 games will be on blu ray which will propell it's place in the market... Last edited by S//P; 29-05-06 at 06:29 PM. |

Some have speculated that Sony is really betting big on blu-ray and in fact are using the PS3 simply as a mechanism to try and get blue-ray to be the accepted standard. I think they are going to have a bit of trouble myself, but only time will tell.
