Default dish size needed for optus 160e

Hi all, I double posting, I'm down in nz at the present and I thought it would be interesting to post a thread that I have posted on sats general down there. See if any of the sat heads wants to answer the q and a.

Hi guys

Long time no speak it's been 2 years since my last confession. (well actually two years since my last visit done here.)

Guys I need help my other half folks live in the bay of islands, new zealand. I'm visiting at the the moment and the tv is crap. I was going to pay for them to have sky, but they did not want that so now I need help. Up in europe I can set dish's up more easy but I need to know the size of dish to pick up optus at 160deg with both the oz and nz beam. Is it possible. Lots of dish's I see around be look either 80 or 1m dish. Would a 1m dish pick up the oz beam in nz. My folks want free to air only at the moment.

I also find that sat gear out here is mega expensive. I can pick up a 80cm dish in the uk for £30.00 in oz its £100 or $200 from dick smiths. I could order a clone dreambox 500s from dealextreme for $100. Could someone be so good to give me the cheap options.

Thanks

Ki

Hi mate you might try Ebay for some gear from China, got to be something on there that would be less money, all the clone boxes are from there. They sure know who to charge in NZ. Hope you find a cheaper source for the gear you need.

Season's Greetings Wez

Hi wez,

I'm finding my way a little down here, both sly and freeview run from 160deg east. There is a package open down here with a tit 3 card called austar on 154 deg. Looks like its a closed bin file, now I need to find out where to get them. I'm having problems find out if oz beams cover nz the distances are a llittle more difficult to judge.

Regards

ki

It's going to be difficult for us to answer here mate. The footprints on Lyngsat suggest that the Aussie beams are just that, confined to Aus. The guys down there will know what's feasible.

You wont get the Aussie beam in Kiwiland without a big dish - the beam is shaped to avoid Kiwiland.

You could try the Optus Aurora service on 12407V on 156E - that appears to be dual encoded in Irdeto 1 & 2 and there may be keys for Irdeto 1.

Thanks anolo and all you others.

I've been studying the beams from the sats on lyngsat and trying to judge the distances. I'm up at the north end of the north island and its a 3-4 hours flight over to east coast oz. Knowing the footprints of nilesat ect I'm guessing there may be a possibility of getting some oz channels. Problem is i'm having trouble getting the inlaws to move on a dish. You won't believe they only have 3 channels up here and they go off when someone next doors turns on a hairdryer. Mind you it is 26deg and we have been swimming today whilst you are all still shivering up there.

Hi martin,

In fairness being able to get access to these forums is a way of keeping me sane. Its all well and good but theres only so much sun and sand you can take. You need to keep the brain ticking over. In fact I went a week without my own net access and went off and bought another laptop as the linux one I had did not want to run the vodafone 3g dongle. Moneys not everything. Anyway I'm back up in another two weeks if I can get back with all these new security checks.

Merry xmas and a happy new year all.

ki
