Default Modem and router vs modem/router

I've been on cable with a Buffalo router and my Virgin modem. Now I have moved to an area with no cable I will be on ADSL2+.

Is it preferable to use a single modem/router as opposed to using my Buffallo router as well as an ADSL modem?
