Default Starting with a new box

Hi All,

I'm really new to all this, i've been reading as many tutorials as I can get my hands on and am liking everything so far. There are just a few questions I don't seem to be able to have confirmed by reading, was wondering if anyone could shed some light on them please:

1. I have a Pace 1000 box, complete with FunCard. Reading through I see there was a 3.7 software update which has stopped the funcard in its tracks (hope I'm correct so far ). Is this the end of the funcard? Most people are suggesting moving to MOSC's? The reason I ask is I'm finding MOSC's hard to come by and using the existing funcard I have would be easier.

2. Why would someone choose to 'hack' an original Vermin box when there are Dbox / Kryptview boxes available? As far as I can tell, by the time you purchace a STB, card programmer etc.. you could have just bought one of the above? The only conclusion I can come to is if someone was hacking boxes for profit, in which case updating cards / boxes would be cheaper in the long run..... but there again, many people advise not to update subscribed boxes / cards for fear of being caught? aww im so confused .

Great little community here, hope to be around for some time.

XPN.

Another question (lol I have more questions than answers). It seems my PACE ditv1000 is running software version cr1 (only 2 chips on the simm so guess its had a no update mod). Is it essential to be running the cr2/cr3 versions to be successful?

The CR software is no longer used, that was back in the N*L days. The latest software version for boxes is v3.7 which is provided by Virgin Media.

Hi blakey_8, many thanks for the reply. If CR1/2/3 are NTL firmwares, is virgins 3.7 required before I can get a flashcard up and running?

Not necessarily but you will have audio description on constantly which can get annoying if you don't want it. Try a 4 chip SIMM, that mat let you update but you will need to keep that SIMM in so that the box still works. Alternatively, the onboard Atmels can be lifted and re-programmed with a v3.7 dump.

Thanks blakey_8, thanks for shedding some light on this.. my mind is going to mush.

TBH, I don't mind the audio descriptions being on, i'm doing this as a kinda project to see if I can more than anything else. I like the challenge lol. May try reprogramming the atmels at a later stage.

So.. I have CR1 f/w on my NTL Pace DLTV 1000, i'm due to buy a progger for flashing a Funcard. I have my IRD and BK, so i'm all set.. am I right? I don't need any older binaries for the Funcard due to the CR1 f/w im using?

Yes, you just need a flash file for the Funcard, you need to create an exteep (containing your BK, IRD and CAM ID) and then you just write the files to the card. Here is a tutorial for programming a Funcard.
