Default Newbie needs help plz :) with Sony projection TV fault

Can anyone advise plz,

I have a Sony 50" projection tv, had it bout 2 n a bit years, a few weeks back I was watching it fine then the following day I tried switching it on and the stand by light temporarily goes green, then flashes amber/red, amber/red on so on....

Ive pulled the set out and I can hear the fan is working fine, you can see through the grill in the back, im assuming thats where the lamp is and you can see something faintly flashing and clicking at the same time, it last a few seconds then goes off, and approx 10 seconds later tries again before the set finally settles in stand-by mode again.

Could this be that I just need a new lamp or do you think it might be something more serious ? I have called an engineer who doesn't charge a call out fee but he didn't seem interested and said (over the phone) it's probably the bulb as when they go the set protects itself by going into stand-by mode.

I don't want to pay out for a bulb to find something else has gone, any idea what I can do, is there anyway of testing it before I lose big money on repairs ?

Many thanks in advance.....
