Post Government mulls over broadband spending

The government is taking advice on how best to spend the money it is set to raise to invest in next generation broadband. The cash will be obtained by a most likely not too popular fixed tax on landlines. Even though the amount isn’t huge at 50p a month, it’s extra tax that most folks could [...]

I don't see why we should be taxed to pay for it, what about all the money they are making from selling off the analogue TV spectrum. And surely, once people have access to broadband, they will have to pay to use it, where will all that money go? Could it not be used to pay retrospectively for the broadband upgrade, rather than making taxpayers who already have it, having to subsidize it.

Why is it that we always end up paying extra to give things to people who mostly dont want it ?

If people wanted broadband, they should of fooking well bought it by now !

....and subsidising the likes of BT & VM so they can do upgrades they should of done years ago is just a joke. If I was in charge i'd of removed their franchises for gross negligence !

Well, I think there are areas that currently can't have it due to the lack of infrastructure, not even via access to 3G services.

The way I understand it the money will go to provide BB to areas where there are not at present. Don't the government take enough tax in VAT? They are taking a good premium in VAT@17 1/2%, if you pat £20 for your BB they are taking £3.50 from your payment, what are they using that for? If they get away with it in the UK they will not take long to jump on the bandwagon here too, the only difference is the crooks here take 21% VAT.

It's only £2.98 VAT actually if you pay £20 for something.

But another good point though, why can't they take it out of that!
