The ONLY alternative for continued free TV, would be to get
a) a motorised dish and motor
b) a linux receiver

Eventually, its probably likely that all(major) satellite providers will go down the IPTV route, and ditch satellite to expand in to the international market(for the masses, not for the few)

After any form of illegitimate TV is over, then you can still say to yourself, it was worth it!

Rollout might be close to 50% but the actual work is closer to 100% done. At the moment, the only thing VM really have to do for most areas is throw switches and distribute new cards.

It will be connected up exactly as it is now. Co-ax into a box. The box will be able to either use standard linear channels or display IP data transferred via their inbuilt modems. VM wont be laying ethernet cable anywhere anytime soon. Its just not necessary for what they are trying to do !

Forgive my ignorance!!. But just how will the future VM/TIVO boxes be able to link to the internet to view the likes of Youtube without an ethernet link??

Ooops pardon me i missed the inbuilt modem bit!! It's been a long day!

That makes a lot more sense when your wide awake lol. A question- could you hook a wireless router to it, so we can ditch our bb modem lol

It used to be done that way with just a single box for TV & BB, but many had problems, especially those with the TV nowhere near the PC. I believe that most (early) Pace boxes only have 10BaseT Ethernet so are limited to around 7Mbit.

Because the processor is shared between modem & stb you'll actually be lucky to get more than 4Mbit/sec out of them which is why they were largely abandoned in favour of standalone modems. The newer boxes will do somewhat better but still probably not much more than 10Mbit/sec

Still, 4Mbit/sec is more than enough for an IP based vod stream and, if you also use one of the newer codecs, you could probably reduce that to 1-2Mbps relatively easily. I still suspect that a lot of the older boxes will need to be replaced fairly shortly for some of the new functionality to be effective though.

Does anyone have any kind of rough idea how long is left before Nagra 3 hits the Knowsley area on Merseyside?

We're on a Eurovox and don't have an official box (internet only package) so unable to check if we're on 3_7 yet.
