No mate, you have to be hard wired (directly connected) to the modem via Ethernet cable.

I can remember seeing instructions once, think it was on Modshack a good few years back. Can't remember the details just a hazy memory of using a hub and more messing around than its worth.

Thinking about it I guess you go

modem to a hub
hub to router
and
hub to computer <--this ones bypassing the router

The hub will pass the same data out of all ports.

I think thats probably right. A lot of ****ing about though, if you even have spare cables, a hub, spare network card and its even solving much more aggravation than it brings. I guess its worth it to some depending on your setup.

You know you can sniff through any modem, doesn't have to be hacked or subscribed. I just hook a old one up to a spare feed so I don't have to upset my network.

a lot of the time it wont work due to the router poo-poo-ing all the packets that arent designed for itself, its not a matter of the ports its just how the router works

there is a way i sort of found out (ive never ever seen it used about here or any other cable forums) but youll have to get your telnet client to run without any limit on the buffer which im sure is possible.
basically do this

1) enable telnet on modem
2) login using telnet client
3) go to the ip_hal table
4) do a dir
5) now enable both debugging options. i think clientifdebug is adequate, but if that dont work enable dhcpc_debug too
6) the telnet client will now show all of the dhcp packets recieved by the modem in full
7) once a say 24 hour log has been taken of this, search through in a text editor for the usual starts 00:14:a4, 00:0e:9b, 00:02:8a, 00:d0 etc and 8) document all the ones you want to keep.

Yeah, and I think its better if you sniffed for macs outside your area. Like through a friends house.

It is not possible to telnet to a modem running completely stock firmware, as for sniffing macs through a router it is sort of possible if your router supports configuring VLANS such as a router running DDWRT then you can put the port your PC is connected to onto the same vlan as the WAN port, this will stop it communicating with anything within your local network. Also if it is set to automatically obtain an ip it will attempt to contact vermins DHCP for one. The reason that you cant sniff from behind a router is because a router by design will not forward broadcast packets which is what the DHCP packets you are capturing to get the mac address are!

Prob off topic, and I`ll expect a flaming...re routers...don`t update the hax firmware on them thru the webgui via the router. I bricked 2 255s until I realised the error of my ways.
Prob best to do bugger all including sniffing via the router and use SMAC to spoof your PC NIC and just use that. The router is just another obstacle to overcome.
Sorry if I`m pointing out the obvious etc

Don`t beat me boss!
