Default How to mod a VM modem?

Firstly Hi I'm new here and just want to know a few things.

I've been a customer with VM for a few years now and recently because I missed a bill (first one from the time ive been with them) and didn't pay it in time not only did they cut all my services, they also charged me a 10 pound fee on top of my bill!

Not only did it pee me off I thought sod them if they can't be decent enough with me why should I bother?

So I'm wondering would it be possible to mod my modem so I could get a free internet service?

I know people charge for this but I thought I would ask and save myself a few bob.

Hope somebody can help

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

There's a few stickies at the top of each forum, one of them is this

http://www.techwatch.co.uk/forums/25...oad-links.html

If you look at the url for the modem bit you'll find some guides and other stuff, the Haynes guide is a good start.

There's another sticky with some explanation of the terminology, have a read through a few threads and a bit of a search then give it a crack.

If you get stuck just ask and people are happy to help those that have tried to help themselves.

Thanks mate

I have already have had a search and found out the new 50meg VMNG300 can't be done yet and I surely would need a internet connection to do it (and I'm only using a crappy mobile net dongle thing due to VM being barstools!)

So I guess I will either have to wait or give into them! lol

Do some searching before you ask questions. If you want an answer, search first and ask questions later (if you can't find you are after which would be very unlikely as almost everything you need to know already is covered on this forum).

Don't give up so easy.

Ask around your friends see if anyone has a old modem in the cupboard or look on that auction site, the local free advert paper, shouldn't be hard to find one.

No internet connection needed, just a live feed for it to work. You'll need to get a mac, you can scan from a friends house or venture out with a laptop find a unsecured wifi, check for a vm modem and copy the mac from it.

It has to be on the VM network, so from a friends that has Virgin or like I've done a few times when desperate using wifi. It has to be in the same general area but not so close as to be on the same ubr, say a mile or two down the road.

Awk bit of a bummer considering my friends are either on sky or BT lol

And all the other virgin users around my area have passwords on their wifi and I don't speak to them lol

Back to the drawing board I guess....

Youre starting to sound like a bit of a defeatist lol.

I can understand the mates, I have the same problem, all on adsl or behind a router or just too far away. Theres tons of open networks out there though, people are dumb thats not going to change anytime soon. Last time I went out mooching it was probably a hour driving around, tried maybe 20 open connections and found 3 macs.

Get backtrack 4 mate and go out wardriving! lol seriously once you have got a mac that'll get you online to run a scan it's not that hard to find peeps to swap with or maybe someone would be kind enough to donate a working one if they knew what area you were in....

Anyways mate first things first, dig out that modem, dust it of and see what needs doing! all the information and help is here.

Regards,

Prof
