If you havn't got cable installed you will have to contact virgin, not all areas have cable.

is there any way i can find out if cable is in my area ? also ive just moved into a new house and theres a sat dish installed is there any SPECIAL box,s i can get and what do i have to do to get up and running any help gratefully received, thanks

If you go to virginmedia web site, scroll to the bottom of main page and click on digital tv, put your postcode in and you should find out if you have cable.

If its a small sky dish you can get some free channels with a sat freeview box, you cant get any pay channels from sky except by card sharing with a linux type box, sky isnt hacked.
you can move the dish to some other satellites but some would need a larger dish,and use a box like a technomate etc, see in the satellite section for more info on this.

Thanks for that , if i find out i've got cable in my area what do i do next ? do i have to get like say a basic package from vigin to get installation into house or is there a way round this ? also whats card sharing ? sorry new to this but want to learn- thanks for your help

yes get something to house, but all boxes will be dead in under 6 months anyway

Cable is at the moment being changed to a new encryption See nagra 3 thread.
Card sharing is a way of connecting a small network of linux type boxes together through the internet and sharing a card or various cards, mainly used with satellite, but is possible with cable, dreambox is a popular type of box for this.
A basic package would be the way to go if you have no cable at the moment.

Thanks for that seamouse - they say the wisest person in the room is the one who,s made the most mistakes- whats the way forward here for me is it worth me sorting out with virgin only to get to the last episode of lost and the bloody thing switches off ???? can someone give me some constructive advice on this please?

at the end of the day the choice is yours i would take a look here and see if your area is listed first you could get 4 months out of a box you could also get 4 weeks
as for card sharing you will have to google that as we have very limited talk on this subject here as the forum could be closed down google is you friend for that subject
