How did you create the separate partition? When you were installing Vista? Using the disk management option in windows? Or some other software you downloaded?

Try using the the xp bootable cd to remove the partition and then recreate it using the options.

See link if unsure on how to create a partition using the windows xp cd

hxxp://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348/EN-US]

Copy and paste the link changing "hxxp" to http, I cannot post url until I reach the 10 post mark, sorry.

Other than that you can also install a third party piece of software to create the partition, EASEUS Partition Master is a piece of software I use and recommend.

Let me know how you get on mate.

Just install the windows XP disk first, as the older OS has to be 1st installed before the newer version of windows, completely delete the HDD partitions on xp setup which you would run from intital boot up.... then half the amount of hdd space available and create 2 partitions the same size, install windows on the 1st partition, then do the same but install vista on the 2nd partition.

You can install XP without having to reinstall Vista (or Win7) but you have to live with the fact that Vista won't boot as XP will overwrite the MBR of your hard drive. Installing EasyBCD (once you've installed XP) will rectify this and allow you to boot both operating systems.

Not a big fan of Vista so I can't guarantee any of this.

There are plenty of ways to customise your boot menu with 2 operating systems installed, Easybcd is a nice piece of software to use to do this, as Ganzee just said. There is another way I am familiar with but instead of typing it all out I will give you a link for you to read over

hxxp://windowssecrets.com/2008/02/14/01-Make-your-computer-dual-boot-Vista-and-XP

Again, change the hxxp to http

Cheers
