Thinking of getting a dm box & the thing which scares me is not working with linux since i have got all the patience ,but the price difference looking at £1000 all the way down to humble £45 .Now all i want is to open as many channells as possibble ,not interested about twin tunner ,hd ,pvr ..would i get the same amount of sd channells with dm 500 s as dm 7020 or dm 800 as a matter of fact

You would get the same channels with any Dreambox, with the only exception of the 800 and the 8000, as they will get you the some HD channels. As for the price, you will never get a genuine DMM box for £45 these are cheap copies which are not as good as the real thing, some will say they are as good, but they have not had a genuine box so how would they know? You have got to understand that to have your DMM box running as you want it takes a great deal of time, it is not a plug and play, nor anywhere near that, box, though you do seem to appreciate that part of it. There are other Linux boxes which you might consider and some are not that difficult to set up, they might not have the features the DMM boxes have, but they should be capable of receiving as many channels as a DMM box.

Some of the clones are reasonable, some of them are absolutely abysmal. You pays your money and you takes your chance.

Theres virtually no channels open on keys or patcjhes these days so if you want guaranteed service you need to think about a subscription to a service.

To be brutally honest a DB isnt an ideal box for someone new to the hobby, but if you are determined then expect to spend weeks learning how to drive it and start getting the best out of it.

Thanx a lot for ur speedy reply . I 'd like to eventually get in to dm field ,its just that right now can't afford the £200 upward price & since they all open the same channells apart from the few HD ones the best thing for me is to start with the cheaper end then later move towards the 800 version for HD viewing & hopefully by that time the price might have come down a bit ( wishfull thinking ) . Do DM 500 ,or 600, EAGLE ,NANOXX ,TM 600 & max2000 some others that i cant think of stand at more or less the same price ? If they are all within the same price range , which of the above would be the best buy ?

Avoid the eagles - they have a terrible reputation!

Also if you have or are planning to have a motorised dish be aware many clones have poor power supplies and wont drive a motor properly

The TM600 would be a good option which I believe Southern Satellite also sells. I Agree with Analoguesat, avoid the eagles or most dreambox clones.
