Right, I've not bitten the bullet as yet due to the cost involved. I'm just wondering guys, would it not be cheaper for me to get my own dish and STB and subscribe to foreign channels as all I want to do is watch the footy?

Thats an option for you, the top packages like Canal Nordic and Sky Italia will set you back a little over £1000 for the year. But you will get more football than on Sky UK. It really depends on how much you are willing to spend, there are cheaper packages like Diemma, it also depends on who shows the games you want to watch. Even a JSC sub at about £120 for the year might do for you.

Rick is right mate you will get the 3 PM games on the foreign sats and loads of games that are not shown on Sly and if you like you can have the French Italian, Spanish and German games too, much better than anything Sly have and their films tend to be shown on there long before they are on Sly UK. The prices Rick gave you are if you get your card from a UK retailer, if you know someone in either Italy or Scandinavia you could get them to get the card and receiver for you and let them pay for it there and you pay them, some say it would be about half the cost to do it that way.

Regards Wez

Thanks guys! The only problem is I don't know anyone in Europe to do that for me. What do the cheaper packages have & do they support HD channels? Also, what size of dish would I need & which STB would be best for HD? I'm in Central Scotland guys.

Cheers for all the help guys!

If you have a look on LJ's Live on Sat, you can get a good Idea of who shows what, and HD/SD. Dish size, I would suggest a motorised 80cm-1m as this will give you a good range. Reciever wise, I would suggest talking to Ian at Southern Satellite, he will sort you out. Think about if you want PVR, Twin Tuner, Linux etc as there is a wide veriety out there.

Thanks for the information Rick. I appreciate that. I believe that you do not need planning permission for a dish < 1m? Can anyone verify this for me?

Correct, less than 1m, planning permission is not needed, though there are areas that are the exception.

Cheers mate! I don't want my neighbour to complain. The guy that's adjacent to my back garden is a complete tosser and I just know that he'll have something to say about the dish.

Yep, I have the odd neighbour like that too.

Try to put the dish in a place that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb if you can, as far as the neibs are concerned, but of course make sure that you get the arc that you want.

Generally speaking yup, ALTHOUGH if you live in a conservation area or a listed bulding there are different rules.

If you live in a normal house in a town then stick your 1m dish up where you like coz theres nothing the tosser next door can do about it

(although its not a good idea to put it too close to one of his windows)
