Default Modem spoofing

Been having lots of trouble lately like many others. Don't have problems finding macs that work, its they don't last very long. Something like 2-5 days and they go dead.

When they go dead they stick on the ranging stage. In the past i have never spoofed my modem to a particular model. Is spoofing needed to get the mac operational in the first place or is more to keep it stable.
