Default mac scanning ?

a friend of mine has just got n*l (upc) broadband, he has a cisco modem/wireless router in one can you scan for mac's wireless or do you have to be wired

now thats a question ???? i have never thought of that b4 as when you sniff, you do it wired 2 mode and not by router,i would like 2 see how its done ????

You normally need to be wired directly to the modem so your PC is allocated a true IP address rather than the NAT address allocated by the router.

If you scan with the router allocated IP then I suspect that your scan packets wont be propogated out onto the cable network so you'll only end up scanning your own internal network.

well i tried it wireless for 5 hours and didnt get anything, next step wired, but how long does it usually take to find a mac ?

guys i had this problem i disabled my firewall wired direct all good loads coming through in the first 20 mins ,, an hour 3 pages

Download DHCP Sniffer, run it and just leave it for a couple of days. MAC scanning can take a long time if you want a decent amount of them. Don't bruteforce either as you will just get blank results back.
