Default 20mph speed limit in UK towns/cities.

Dublin City Council have introduced a 30kph (18.75mph) speed limit in the city centre and the public, in general, are totally pissed off with it. I've been arguing with a councillor, via email, about this. He argues that a 20mph limit was introduced in over 200 towns and cities in the UK and it's all a bed of roses. I would be very interested to hear any opinions from people who live in or drive through these areas. Are roads safer, journey times shorter, retail spending up?

They have or are going to have a 30 KPH limit in Dublin and I read on the RTE text last night that people are not that happy with it. Wonder what they will come up with next, maybe a fishing hook without a point in case the angler gets one stuck in his finger or tennis balls for playing cricket?

There is a rumor that it is going to be removed sooner rather then later. I missed the reason. Lets hope it is true.
Still I am curious how anyone could ever brake that limit in Dublin, unless you are a cyclist or on one of those electric mobility car.

Is this an attempt to make us drive less and use public transport more? They have pumped in a heck of a lot more money in to railways and as fuel prices continue to rise, people will think that they should use the train as
a) its quicker(200km would be a heck lot quicker for links to large city's)
b) its cheaper

From what I have been told the trains are far from cheap, never use them as I am out in the middle of nowhere here and no buses or trains, all these government tw&ts think we all live in cities and can hop on a bus every few minutes, we need cars and they charge us loads for the fuel we MUST use to get anywhere, bloody city slickers, they know nothing about the country.

Fair enough. I live in a town and travel to a city every day. Any time anything great happens industrially, the gov't doesnt care to think about those in the country side as they do not represent the majority

If I wanted to get in to Leeds, driving would be horrendous! Not to mention the parking. It is also takes the same amount of time to get in to Leeds by train rather than a car

From Keighley to Leeds, it costs me £4.20(return) and
from Keighley to Bradford, it costs me £2.40(return)These prices are the standard. I get a half fare pass lol

Definitely going from Keighley to Bradford, its cheaper. By car, it takes 20-25 mins to get there. By train, 30 minutes.
To get in to Leeds, it takes 40-50 minutes to get there by car and 30 minutes to get there by train

If your going at peak times, then yes it may work out cheaper to actually get a car over, but trains are convenient

They do also charge you more if you go to different places, though be it the same amount of time e.g.: The journey to Leeds takes the same amount of time to reach the station as Bradford, however they can charge more to get in to Leeds as there is more demand for Leeds trains rather than Bradford trains

It also does depend on your railway company(Over here, people have got no choice but to use northern rail)

Oh and I went to a school in the country side-Well its a really small town in the countryside(Ilkley), but it was posh any how

So what was the schools song mate, I think I know before you tell me lol.

I have a free bus and train pass, but the train station in Cork, where I go most, is so far from the city centre that you need a bus or a taxi to get there. Also the public transport service here is rubbish and if you want to get some shopping then you need a motor the carry it home. I go to the Cork region to fish for cod and whiting and there is no way you could use the train for that. I do understand what you are saying about the convenience of the trains, I would love to be able to use the trains, but it is just not practicable for me to do it, if I were going to any city for just a trip or for an appointment I would consider using the train.

We are getting of the topic here and I hope that the OP is not too p!ssed with us, apologies if you are mate.

Regards Wez
