Default How to tell the difference between a bpi 1.0 mac & a bpi 1.1 mac

Can someone please help me with a few questions? I've had a good root around and could not find any answers to the following unless I have overlooked something!

How can you tell the difference between the following when trying new macs:

* a 'bpi (off) mac'
* a 'bpi 1.0 mac'
* a 'bpi 1.1 mac'

Is their any way of telling or is it just pot luck?

Also, i own an old school sb4100 with hackware that is still ok on a unforced 10mb mac/config (00:20 mac) and am thinking of buying a sb5101. If i bought a jcat cable could i use the same jcat cable on both the sb4100 & sb5101 in order to flash firmware. Or would an rs232 cable work on both instead? I want to buy the cable but i would like to know that i can buy the one cable instead of two as someone else previously ha.ck3d my modem for me.

Thanks!

When your modem has locked on and is online, click status (I think, the page that displays what the modem is doing at it gets to operational) and look near the bottom, it should say what BPI the MAC is using there.

Thanks guys but i can't see squat on any of the hack tabs! Probably down to the old school 'hackware' firmware for the 4100!

All i have is this on status page:

Acquire Downstream Channel Done
Obtain Upstream Parameters Done
Establish IP Connectivity using DHCP Done
Establish Time Of Day Done
Transfer Operational Parameters through TFTP Done
Register Connection Done
Initialize Baseline Privacy Done --------------APPARENTLY THIS MEANS MY BPI is on (but is it 1.0 or 1.1)
Cable Modem Status Operational

Its 'hackware' firmware:
Software Version: SB4100-0.4.4.5-SCM01-NOSH-2.03
Hardware Version: 0
MIB Version: II
GUI Version: 1.0
VxWorks Version: 5.3

Other pages:
Frequency 331000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
QAM 256
Network Access Control Object ON
Power Level 2 dBmV
The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading
HFC MAC Address 00:20:**:**:**:**

Channel ID 2
Frequency 37500000 Hz Ranged
Ranging Service ID 197
Symbol Rate 2.560 Msym/s
Power Level 40 dBmV

BLAH
ISP default Config File Pd2b67121*******.cm
I am in a Pure NTL area: International DOCSIS as cardiff is 221 as per the haynes guide.

Cheers Anton,

Dont make me answer that question as it's gonna take ten times longer to answer than to ask!!

Only reason why i ask is that i have a 10mb mac (00:20) that's been working for about 6 months on my sb4100 and has not been rebooted for a about a month or so.

I was curious to figure out why I was not affected by the bpi issue and most people near me who have ambits all have the 0.25mb connections at the moment and are to paranoid to restart their modems. I cant find any way of changing the bpi setting on it when it goes over to 1.1 so i'm planning ahead (or playing it safe at the moment!).

I have since figured that bpi WAS enabled but the old firmware GUI i'm using isn't that helpfull, hence the reason why I am curious of it being 1.0 or 1.1!

In a nutshell i suppose I want to know when I will need to jump ship as the firmware has not been updated by any developers for i don't know how long!

I am also trying to rule out the reason why my modem has previously worked with this bpi setting enabled and wonder if it is because I may or may not be using a bpi 1.0 mac? I'm not sure! Thats also what i'm trying to figure out.

The 'hackware' firmware on it is SB4100-0.4.4.5-SCM01-NOSH-2.03, which i hear is too old school nowadays from a lot of threads but i figured if it ain't broke........!

I guess i'm just troubleshooting out of interest and trying to save myself from a headache from lack of connection in the hopefully not too near future!

I'm also thinking of an upgrade to sb5101, but some guy has offered me a 250 with Haxorware Firmware v39 for £20. Would you say that is a good deal or should i try and get the sb5101 instead?

Then again i've also heard the 5101's may go kapput at the same time as my modem! Ho hum
