ok i have tried another box and thats the same , picture breaking up on one freq signal is 82% on freqs up to about 500mhz then it starts dropping to 70% . it may be because of the longish cable i have had to lay . would a booster help? if so which one and where from as i dont want to spend too much as it may be going off shortly . thanks

Its fairly standard for higher frequencies to be attenuated more by long cable runs. Its also possible that the VM techs have simply set the higher frequency transducers for lower output. You could use a frequency slope compensating amplifier but probably not worth the expense at this point.
