Sorry if this is in the wrong thread...but just coming back on something said above.
How come 7W is so hard to see? We can see so far East from the UK, so why is it so hard to see what seems to me to be a unremarkable distance West?

I am totally aware I am a complete newbie bye the way...so sorry if that is a daft question that makes the more experienced guys laugh!

It's not so much the position of the satellite, but its output power and the focus of its beams. Most "birds" are positioned for a specific region on earth. The more focused the beam is, the less likely anyone on the fringe of its footprint can "see" it. Lyngsat has footprint maps that shows what area a satellite covers, the more on the fringe you are, the bigger the dish required to "see" it
