when im on the net i cant close the page with the x in top riht hand corner only been happening a few weeks is this a virus and can it be fixed

Try doing a system restore, it might just be a corrupt registry heading, but to be on the safe side run a full anti virus, and anti malware, check.
You can always disconnect using task manager, just press Ctrl Alt and Del at the same time, to start task manager.

Which browser are you using? Try a different free one, like Firefox.
