What happens with ADSL suppliers is that they have an "up to" 20Mb service, which you dont always get, unless of course your with O2. You may even get 2Mb broadband when paying for "up to" 20Mb broadband. This is because the organisations are using BT's outdated infrastructure, that was really meant for telecomms.

When you go to a cable supplier(VM being the only one in this country), you tend to get what you pay for, considering its new, updated technology that BT is also rolling out bit by bit across their own network.

You do get throttled, but thats a completely different ball park. Here are my experiences with two ISP's I've used

Good service
Bad customer service

O2
Good service(paying for up to 8Mb service, and receiving 5.6Mb/s)
Excellent customer service
Cheaper than VM

I also don't see why home users would need to use 100Mb/s legally. They are also trialling 200Mb/s broadband as well, which also begs the question about who on Earth would use it legally ie: you'd be downloading at 12.5MB/s on 100 Meg broadband(theoretically), and would be able to download a 4.7GB DVD in 376 seconds or 6 minutes and 16 seconds(theoretically)

With 200Mb/s broadband, you are theoretically downloading at a speed of 25MB/s meaning that you can download a 4.7GB DVD in 188 seconds or 3 minutes and 8 minutes(theoretically)

No one needs that speed for legal purposes IMHO

Why buy a car that can do 150mph when you can only do 70mph on the road ??? its just you like 2 know that you can go faster if you want...

you guys should try downloading bluray 100meg sounds pretty good to me i just cant afford it

It's not too bad on a 20MB connection tbh. ie: a standard blu ray disk is 25GB?
If it is, then the theoretical download speed should be 2.5MB/s, meaning that the disk should download in 10,000 seconds or 166 minutes and 40 seconds or 2 hours, 46 minutes and 40 seconds which is not that bad, considering you got the disk for free.

Still not used for legal purposes though! Also, a lot of online downloadabe content(legal) is actually sometimes cheaper to buy from online retailers instead, so a lot of people buy that way.

i here what your saying but on virgin media only the top speeds are available 24/7 at the moment 50 meg soon to be 100 but 20 meg is capped between 6am to around 11pm most of the time working people are awake you would have to redo your downloads speeds to 5meg for most of the day ,and i have to ask if my downloads are not legal then why do virgin provide the newsgroups from which i can download for free this makes no sense how illegal can it be

I didnt say all downloads were illegal! Virgin probably offset some money to pay artists etc...

I said that the vast majority of users cant possibly need 100 meg broadband for just downloading legal content.

Web browsing can be done at 2 megs. Legal downloads can be done at 20 meg
