The BB tax NEEDS to be put to use for laying fibre optic cables, because they cant lose any speed and last for the future. There would never be a need to lay any other type of cable.
If BT lines get a fibre optic cable connection(meaning the death of ADSL), then we wouldnt need a phone line, or we might see a bidding war between BT and VM and we will also see more competition in the market Other providers on the current line can only offer 20MB max, thanks to the BT lines laid down Im waiting for the day when we get 1Gb BB lol

Fibre optic lines have bandwidth limits just like any cable. VM's backbone is a mixture of various cable technologies but consists mostly of 10Gig/sec and 50Gig/sec pipes. You want more then you either have to increase the number of fibres in the bundle or change equipment (difficult as you require optical repeaters at frequent distances (every few miles I think) ) Quote:
BT's backbone is already mostly fibre and they have far more potential capacity than VM. The only difference is that last mile. BT have already started moving towards fibre-to-the-kerb in some areas but its going to take a while as the investment is huge. A BB tax, however, is not the correct way to do this. If BT are interested in the broadband market then they should be raising the capital themselves to do the job like any other commercial concern. Taxes should be used for the benefit of the population, not to save large corporations having to compete in an open market. Quote:

NTL will supply a full synchronous 1Gbps line if your willing to pay for it. I believe its somewhere around £30k per month. BT will also supply similar but I believe they are a tad more expensive. |

NTL? Get with the times lol
Oh and, let me just reach in to my swiss bank account to pull out 30k lol. I didnt know that it was actually possible at this moment to get speeds of 1Gb/sec, but just with a really hefty cost

afaik, NTL is still the name of the company if you want business solutions. VM is only a consumer name.
You can actually get faster than 1Gbps symetrical on a business line if you can pay. You can certainly rent 50Gbps lines on a per hour basis in quite a few places now (usually cities). I think you can rent 1Gbps connections for about £75 per hour in some locations. Last edited by TheCoder; 08-03-10 at 12:35 AM. |
