Default Volvo v40 '98 R abs fault.

ABS light stays on so I read the fault codes and decided from the faults stored that it needed a hydraulic modulator unit. Fitted a secondhand unit and cleared the codes but light didnt go out. Code ABS-441 Valve Power supply, signal missing keeps coming back. This code wasnt stored originally only since I fitted the secondhand unit. I checked the earths and feeds. There was a high resistance in the earth circuit so I made a new earth. Light still didnt go out. I followed the flow chart in Vadis which said basicly check feeds and earths, then drive at 6 MPH to remove code 441. If the fault still doesn't clear it says change the hydraulic modulator. So my customer got the unit exchanged at the scrappie for another one, but the problem still remains! I have tried as a last resort directly giving the unit a feed and earth from the battery but still keep getting 441. I cant see that 2 different units from the scrappie could have the same fault. Any suggestions?

Ask volvo as a start and check other volvo sites just in case its a common error.

Asked Volvo but they want to sell me a new modulator for more than the car is worth. Might be worth looking on Volvo forums though.

Found this:

ABS ECU Repair - Cheap, Fast & Efficient

Volvo Performance Club in association with HLM Chiptuning (aka Volvotuning) are able to offer a ABS repair service - Call 01527 577710 for details or by sending an email to info@chiptuninguk.com. Just quote "ABS repair service" in your email.

Repair is for 1994 models onwards. It includes all 850 and 70 series upto 2002.

Symptoms usually are classified as intermittent warning lights for the ABS and/or TRACS lights comng on or staying on after start up. Other symptoms also include the warning light being triggered by a bump in the road - the ABS pump will fire and send a shudder through the car and the light will come on.
Frequency of the light coming on will increase until the light is on all the time

Diagnostics available (by appointment)

For those requiring this service - HLM will be happy to send you full details including unit removal instructions and all other details you need.
You can have it done when talking the car to HLM or via a postal service.
DIY removal comes with full instructions. E5 torx sockets (1/4 inch drive) can be supplied as necessary on DIY removal.
Installation of the repaired unit is the exact reverse of removal.

This service carries a 12 month warranty (subject to conditions) on the repair work.

For safety and legal reasons - it not recommended that you drive your car without the ABS unit - The speedometer and the cruise control will not work while the unit is removed. The ABS and TRACS (If your car has it) will not work while the ABS Control Unit is removed (These do not work when the ABS light is ON), which is the same situation as when your ABS Unit has failed.

Ok just a quick note to people whos abs/tracs light is on,If after you have replaced your ecu with a working one and the lights are still on dont panic or think about suicide as i did today after i replaced mine!!!!.What you need to do is after fitting said unit take it to the main stealers and get them to run it through the diag computer and to clear down the fault codes this in turn will put the abs light/tracs light off and all will be normal again, providing that is that the is nothing wrong with the sensors,Hope this helps anyone who is having problems
And this:

Cheers Realist, reminds me of when I was at school - getting others to do my homework for me! Thing is back then I used pay for the privelage in fags!

At vast expense the customer has decided to go for a new ABS modulator, also 4 new tyres, a complete exhaust system (including cat), lambda sensor, front discs and pads, rear pads and a track rod end! All on a '98 volvo with 230,000 on the clock

Still if he wants to donate his money to me who am I to complain?

Smile Re: Volvo v40 '98 R abs fault.

this is a very common fault indeed the fault is usually caused by the ABS module but this can also lead to a problem with the pump, you can get it fixed here www.ecutesting.com or just call them for some free technical advice - they are very good at giving advice over the phone.
