Default Modem Help

Hello

hope you guys can help me here.

Recently got a new modem and on virgin media. I did a speed check and found out I was getting 0.2mb! That can't be right surely?

I was told that there is a way of forcing a 20mb connection? Does anyone know anymore about this or how you do it?

Thanks !

vm speeds are controlled by the system computers, you should check your package and find what you are paying for and if its too low ring up and start moaning, they do cap speeds from early afternoon (not joking) till late night especially if you download a lot so they might have capped you, try speed testing at different times before you ring them so you have proof that you are not getting what you are paying for.

It can't be that I have over used it though, I only got it on thursday and havent yet had a good enough speed to download. It's really frustrating.

Is it not possible to force a connection then?

I can believe that time depends on speed as there's a lot of traffic at certain times but mines always bad. I just thought I would get opinions. Before I phoned and complained

if you over download vm automatically clamp your speeds to less than dialup speeds, if you are new to the service i would ring them and ask for an explanation, most isp's try and tell you that new customers need to have their line "trained" for the best speed this is total bs as the speed can be adjusted by any tech with access to the system settings, your speed is dependant on the "noise" level of your line which depends on the distance from exchange, my own provider tried telling me the same until i got to second line support and once they realise that they are talking to someone with tech experience and knows how to read router stats they soon adjust your speed to suit.
vm system control monitor your line and once you hit your limits they auto adjust your line, resetting is controlled by system and will reset to normal after a preset time, manual overide is available but you need to call them and prove that they are wrong, be prepared to be run round the houses as they will blame everything from your line,pc,rain, snow, and even next doors cat before admitting anything is wrong with their system.

i to was capped so i complained, i explained that i d/load xbox demos i had a 10mb sub, buy using a bandwidth test i was capped to 2mb - the reply from v/m was unfair usage - however if i wanted to upgrade to 20mb i no longer would be capped .. i told them i wanted a hd package and to upgrade etc.. v/m immediately became ever so helpfull..
all this unlimited usage is utter rubbish .. you just need a magnifying glass to read the small print..
