Default ADSL Speeds.

Hey folks.

Basically I am with Virgin Media but their traffic shaping policy is severely annoying me to the extent that I am switching suppliers. Now I know that ADSL is technically limited in comparison to Virgin's superior cable network. However, I live literally across the street from the exchange, which as far as I'm aware will make me able to achieve the best speeds.

Basically what I'm asking is that I know for ADSL those who pay for 20mb broadband rarely get it. However, will I be able to achieve maximum speed? If not, what do you guys think will be the best speed I can achieve?

Side note if anyone can answer, would I have to pay for a BT line to be installed, and could I keep my phone number?

Cheers!

If you dont have a phone line you have to pay bt to install one this is a problem in itself cos it comes with a 12 month contract, if the building has a line then there are multiple suppliers, you need to decide what you want and the package you want ie phone/line rental, broadband, there are some good deals out there, just as i said check for a line into the property, remember it might be there connected underground or off your wall to a bt post.

Yes you will need a new line. If you ask BT for it they want £125 !!! yes you read right. Now if you ask talktalk to install one it is £40 or puslenet they want £70. This will be a llu line. Hope this helps
