Default Serial Cable VS Null Modem Cable

Just wanted to know what's the difference between a kryptview serial cable and a null modem cable, which you use for dreamboxes and technomate boxes?

How can you tell which one is which and how are they different?

Thanks

So I can't use a serial cable with a dream box or a technomate box, it won't work, right?

So if I wanted to use it without the adaptor, I have to make sure the wires are 'cross wired' of the cable?
