i thought the general rule in the past was not to use a mac from the same ubr because it would just cause the sub and the clone to just reboot each other, but now we can as long as it is a different cpc mmmhhh interesting i will check it out when i find some macs from a different cpc.

i just checked mine on ipchicken and it cpc1. so when i get some from cpc2 i will post back any findings

I've just been lucky that I've always run a scan from mates when I've sorted their modems and took a note of their full ubr along with the macs I've sniffed to save me having to mess about for future mac changes, but I will now go looking for macs from different cpc's for testing purposes.
Are you using Backtrack for more results or just looking for unsecured networks?

Just unsecured networks. And I think that I have got to know the whole area so now I pretty much pinpoint down to a couple of streets where one UBR starts and another ends. On one occasion, I even took lappy, modem, piece of coax and found a couple of empty terraced properties with a (loose) brown box and bruteforced from there. Going back a while though. I have only 2 directions to head from my location, south and west. North, isn`t VM cabled and east goes over a waterway and over that the UBR is TOO different (diff part of city even though it is quarter mile from me...What is this Backtrack you speak of?

Backtrack is a Linux distro that will get you through WEP encryption in just a few minutes (when you learn to use it) - apparantly.

Cheers for the reply. Might check that out. I`ve studied hacking WEP before but never bothered much, due to most folk having WPA...

Hi guys been reading the thread and trying to understand a few things!
1. How can you tell what cpc a mac number has?
2. When i used IP Chicken it said im on cpc16 but is this the results from where the mac address is originally cloned from ie, is my IP address the same as the person's who owns the mac ( sorry if this is a really stupid question )
3. If my brother who is in the same segment area as me has a different cpc how would i get his mac address? will i just be printed on his actual modem?

1+2 hardly make sence.... but yes , you could use your brothers if he is in the same UBR but a different CPC ... and Yeah its printed underneath the modem.

Feedback: ... i have a list of mac's ... some work fine , until i unplug it then it doesnt lock on again ... i had one on for 32 minutes , triped over the ethernet lead and it rebooted...

I get nothing in DHCP sniffer /force when i sniff so i guess il have to find out who has VM around my area lol.

1. go to tools dot virginmedia dot com & look under client host name. Should start cpc1 or cpc2 or whatever. This is your UBR. This is how to check from any working online modem at YOUR HOUSE! This will change if you take the modem to another part of town. It isn`t modem dependent!

2) Once your modems mac has been validated it is then assigned an ip address by the DHCP server. No two ip addresses are the same and these get changed every so often. If the mac is good, then it will be validated and given an ip address just as if it was the genuine original

3) If your bro is on a different CPC and he has an Ambit 120 or 200 modem (Docsis 1.0 mac) then research suggests will work. I suspect that your brother will prob have a docsis 1.1 mac though unless he has had NTL broadband for years (3 years plus), so therefore it wont work. How to spot macs is highlighted elsewhere. Depends what letters numbers it starts with

The sun is setting on modded modems anyway, slowly but surely. Still. Gotta laugh
