er have they been disabled as i can't get them to work,ive made sure disable smilies is unchecked?

It's a long shot but I once had that problem.
In user cp.
In edit options.
Have you got 'enhanced interface Full WYSWYG Editing' enabled in micellaneous options.It's at the bottom in edit options.
