Last week i lost my wallet with my bank cards and driving lecense some nasty low life person had found it and used my cards online to buy stuff and to make it more worser for me he didnt just stop there he now started to use my identity and apply for credit cards under my name. Its been a nightmare for me trying to stop all these credit cards and tell them its not me and police are being really stupid and not helping at all, they have the address of the person and everything but they wont go and arrest the person how stupid is that?
Any suggestion wot i should do please? thanks |

Firstly make sure all the cards are stopped. I know its a pain but at least that will limit the initial loss.
After that, when you report it to the bank / credit cards make sure you ask for the money back into your account straight away. This is something they have to do under legislation brought in by the FSA. Its now he banks responsibility to prove it isnt Fraud, rather than you proving it is. I would also take the information you have to the police. Give them all the details, and get a crime ref number. This will force them to log it on there system, and therefore, force them to investigate it. Sounds like they are avoiding adding a crime to there figures! Finally, I would contact Experian and Equifax (the 2 main credit ref agencies). Tell them your situation, and you can add a pasword to your credit file. This means that every search for finance will require this password. Every application you make will go to the underwriting department of that company. You will have to give them the password before they can give you a decision on Mortgages, credit cards, loans, etc, as the credit agency wont rovide the information without this. Obviously, this may cause you a bit of hassle when applying for things, but its better than having a scumbag take out credit in your name. Hope this helps.

thanks a lot for the long reply mate it was very helpful cheers.
i have done some of the things u mentioned already like registering with credit experpert and cancelling the cards and also reporting to the police and they provided me with the crime no but i got a letter stating that my case had been closed and nothing was going to happen to the person that is doin all this that means he is walking free with my stuff and still applying for credit cards under my name. i know the address as well cos argos gave it to me i feel like goin there and sorting them my self to be honest but i know i would get arrested for that tbh police are pushin me to do it cos they not helpin me wot else could i do |

Aren't they fantastic. I have been a victim of identity fraud, the fraudster using my previous address to apply for credit.
Unbelivably, the credit companies are the agrieved party, and invariably they will not act. I figured it's my Identity, and felt pretty damn agrieved myself. As I now live in a differant area I was given the run around being passed between forces. The best thing you can do is as Andy has advised. I would also put together a letter that you can alter for each instance but will basically be the same, stating that the debit is not yours and why. You can then send this to anyone who chases you for a debt. Collection Agencies will invariably insist you prove your innocence, and try to bully you into paying. Don't be drawn into phone conversations with any of the fradulent debt. Insist on communicating in writing. If any company insits on persuing you for the debt report the matter to the FSA immidiatley. They will help deal with the issue. It can be alot of hard work with little help to clear your name, but worth doing. If Andy didn't mention it get a copy of your experian report and go through it with a fine tooth comb. Good Luck sorting it out.
