I always felt that film companies were getting lazy with a trilogy. The first is usually good and then its downhill from there. There are some notable exceptions but not many. Lord of the rings was really 1 story but was too long for 1 film so they took the wise decision to break it up. The Matrix was always meant to be a trilogy.

My 2 cent worth.
