A few years back I got a netgear wgr614v4 for free because it was $49.00 with a $50.00 rebate. Since then I have been using it as my gateway wireless router and paying the price. The first problem with it was it overheated all the time. It was extremely hot to the touch. The second problem as drop outs. Sometimes wireless access points could no longer get connectivity because the router would stop talking to them. One side or the other had to be reset.
After all this long torture, I replaced both my dsl modem and netgear router with a 2wire router and modem and it has been heaven since. The wireless signal from the 2wire is much stronger, and where I might have experienced 5%-6% packet loss just from my gateway router at times, I now see no problem and am able to push out full speeds. Sometimes you get what you pay for, that is for sure. |

Surprised to hear you had problems with netgear, but good to hear you got it sorted out.
![]() I tried with a BT router, but the thing was over-complicated to set up and they only offered premium rate support. So I took it back for a refund and got a Belkin - no problems since. ![]() |

I think some of the netgear's have a problem with overheating. They have supposedly even added heatsinks to newer models to reduce the heat. It is extremly hot to the touch, which I think is causing it problems under load.
Several more days later and everything has been awesome with my new setup. I am so glad I made the move. Fortunately with rebate the new modem/router was only $30.00 I did not really like the set-up on the two-wire myself either. I also think it does not have as many configuration options. I have a linksys that I am using as an access point, and I love that router. If I did not get the deal on the 2wire I was going to buy another one for my gateway router. |

I agreee, Linksys does work very well. I haven't had any problems with it myself. I hear that Belkin is a good brand as well, haven't used it myself though.
