Default PS3 - for $1000?

Wowsers - looks like the Playstation 3 is going to retail for over £500 here:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5088154.stm

Seems a dumb price for a console, especially as:

a. There aren't going to be many decent games available at first
b. the price will soon go down anyway
c. You could get 2 Xbox 360's and 5 Wii's for the same price

It's all price mark-up - and I can't buy if they're going to over-charge.

It is way too high, in my opinion. I could put together a very nice pc from scratch for the price a ps3 will cost, and it would be upgradable. I am going to have to wait for a price drop or two to justify it. I am just not much of a console player, so I don't want to spend the money to play 3 games a year.

It'll go down, don't worry :-)
I wouldn't sweat it too much Sony will realise that it's too expensive quickly and they'll adjust it...their shareholders will live.

Yep - wait 6 months/1 year - then not only will the price have dropped, there should be a reasonable collection of games available.

Surprisingly, there are still those who are not only going to buy it without waiting for a price drop, but there are those who are looking to make reservations! Such PS fanatics.

Some folks just have to be the first! And, what would companies do without customers like that? They might have to lower the first prices lol.

Lots of high end products get that - the question is whether there's enough of them to make the PS3 launch worth the while at that price, not least in terms of loss of market share to the Xbox or even Wii.

The price seems like a trial balloon to me ...and one which will rapidly come down unless they see they're cutting into the Xbox shares. I have my doubts!
