Default Downloading Movies and TV Shows to a PC

With iTunes, TV shows can also be bought and downloaded. However, I believe they can only be played with an iPod or Apple devices. There is now a service that allows downloading shows and movies to a computer which uses Windows Media Player. Of course, it has copyright.

Now that Apple seems to have signed a deal with some of the film studios for downloading rental movies, I'm waiting to see what the best system will be.
I love the idea of just renting, and downloading is more fun and quicker than by mail.

That's the trouble I have with Apple - the proprietary system for the iPod and iTunes music/media files. While I'm sure the move is great for Apple fans, I really don't like the idea of having my media trapped in a format that I can't share across my other devices.

Interestingly, though, France are currently challenging this, and trying to force all media formats to be inter-dependable - and this includes Apple, too.

Interesting. I look forward to a world where "compatibility" and "formats" are irrelevant, and media, files, and apps. will work globally... aahhh.... I wish....

As far as commercialism/business goes, I think that time when compatibility and formats are irrelevant will not be anytime soon. It is part of the game of which-one-is-better and which-one-makes-big-money. Unless, of course, France succeeds in challenging the current situation.

Anyhow, as far as Apple devices go, they have become successful because of the functionality and capability. I wouldn't know much because I am not an Apple user myself, although from what I gather from other people who use them and the sheer popularity of Apple, it is a great product notwithstanding compatibility issues.

One could always buy a TV tuner and record shows onto one's hard-drive - as far as I know, it is as legal as making a video recording. Just don't try and put it on the net, or that is definitely illegal.
