I am planning to but a wireless router and wireless Laptop card kit for my Toshiba laptop. My broadband connection at home is connected by the NTL phone company and the cable line currently runs through a modem provided by NTL.
If I buy a router I have noticed thay often have a built in modem. I am guessing I don't need this as I will have to connect the router to the NTL Broadband modem as the cable connection goes directly into it.Currently the patch cable just comes out of the modem and I connect it to my laptop, so can I add a router instead and connect wirelessly? Thanks. |

Hi Mark
I have just gone wireless with NTL. I bought the LINKSYS WRT54GSUK currently at PC world £49.99. It was a piece of cake to install. The wireless router has 4 ports that can be hardwired from it and a wireless facility. I have my PC downstairs hardwired, my daughters PC upstairs wireless and my laptop wireless. its great. You have to connect the laptop to the router with the RJ45 cable initailly to set it up and once up and running just go wireless. When setting up dont put the encryption on until it working properley, then put encryption codes in to keep your network secure. any probs just post on here again. Hope this helps |

Hi
I have a wierd problem using a wireless Access point with a cable modem. When I connect the access point to the cable modem only one computer can access the internet via the wireless access point. A second computer connects to the access point but will not route through the cable modem. If I turn the first one off, the second computer works fine on the internet and now the first computer cannot access the internet. Does a cable modem allow only one pc to connect at a time? If so then the adsl router will not be much use. Regards |

The modem does not prevent more than one user accessing the wireless LAN.I have three on my cablemodemed wireless network.
I don't know what the difference between an access point and a router is, but I can confirm a wireless router will work fine. Perhaps it is because you are you using an access point instead of a router.

Thanks for that. Does it matter if it is a standard wireless router which normally has a WAN side with RJ11 socket and the Lan side with 4 RJ45 ports. Can I plug the RJ45 cable from the cable modem into the LAN side? I also have a firewall which has a RJ45 WAN port and 4 RJ45 LAN ports, does the NAT, could I plug the access point into the LAN side? Is this a better option?

I suspect that your wired router is not for cable use, but for ADSL. My cable router has 1xWAN which is RJ45 and 4xLAN which are also RJ45. The firewall, might work with the access point, give it a go. It depends if the firewall is a router too I suppose.

A wireless access point may not work, but a wireless router certainly does. Maybe you could use the access point after a standard router

Hehe, this thread is getting very confusing isn't it?
![]() If you have more than one computer connected to an internet connection, you need a network set up. If you have a BT internet system (ADSL) then you would probably have a modem with a built in ADSL router. The computers are connected either by cable or wireless to the router. If you have a cable internet system then you will have a cable modem and probably a separate cable router (not ADSL). Again, the computers are connected either by cable or wireless to the router. An access point is a means of connecting computers to a network and is not needed if you have a wireless card (pci card including PCMCIA) or usb card fitted to your computer. I expect that has made it even more confusing.
