Anti-Virus programs are unessential in my view.

Firefox, a decent firewall, Spybot S&D and regular updates (and no porn sites) ~ you'll be fine.

If anything, AVG Free.

Well Norton and McAlfee are just plain hoggers - AVG Free and Avira are okay (and free) but I've not heard of Avast before. So may give that a try on my main PC

A good firewall though is essential - I'm currently using PC Tools Firewall Plus which is a little problematic on the childrens PC but excellent on every thing else.

You can do with any set of free antivirus and antispyware softwares as long as the updates are available and availed at regular intervals.

A good one that is also cheap is f-secure. I got 2 copies for 6gbp off ebay. However you cannot use it with Vista. I actually have been using it for around 4 yrs. Also tried Norton/Symantec. F-secure is much quicker at uploading updates.
The latest f-secure I bought was the 2006 version. I loaded it in July 07 with no problems and will not need to replace it until July 08.
