you must connect your receiver to your router via your ethernet cable!

if you connect straight to the computer without a router. You have to use an Ethernet crossover cable:
Code:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable
and manual assign the IP address (same range of your computer)
subnet mask same range of your computer (255.255.255.0 / 255.255.0.0 / 255.0.0.0)
you can do this in the System Settings > IP Settings
when connected to a router with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol on, just press the on the remote otherwise select each field and just type in the digits from the remote.

Default ip address

Thank you for your help. I'm 72 yrs old and I get confused with most of the technical jargon. When I go into systems and then IP no Ip address appears. I have pressed the red scan button and nothing happens. I am stuck.

your not stuck, the problem is with your Netgear router settings. things to look for in the router manual: automatic assigning IP adresses, access filtering in the Router: who can/can't have access in the network? done by either IP filtering/ MAC. See network security
Are you running windows (XP/Vista/Windows 7) on your computer? Do you know where to find your IP address on your computer: my network locations: show network connections: properties of your lan.
