Default Deutsche Telekom reaches 1m IPTV subs

Deutsche Telekom reaches 1m IPTV subs--Wednesday, 20 January 2010

Deutsche Telekom has reached its target of gaining one million subscribers for its IPTV platform T-Home Entertain by the end of 2009.

“The millionth Entertain package was already sold in early December, so we have been ahead of our plans,” Telekom spokesman Malte Reinhardt told industry newsletter Medienbote. He added that the goal for 2010 is to win another 500.000 customers.

One of the key issues for Telekom this year is HDTV. According to Reinhardt, by expanding the HD channel line-up and the HD on-demand offer the telco wants to develop Entertain into Germany’s leading HD platform. In February public channels ARD, ZDF and ARTE will be added in HD while “intense negotiations” are underway with the main commercial channels, he said. The TV archive and the digital video library currently contain more than 500 titles in HD. “We want to massively extend this figure this year,” said Reinhardt.

At the same time, Telekom wants to focus more on the interactivity enabled through IPTV. For example, with the new video-ticker accompanying Bundesliga offer LIGA total! soccer fans from now on have the possibility to be informed via on-screen messages about important events in parallel games while watching a live game. By pressing a button on the remote control, they can decide whether to instantly watch the scene.

Further new features are a Bundesliga chart which updates in real-time as soon as a goal is scored and a list of the current season’s goal scorers in which each goal can be seen by pressing a button. The interactive Bundesliga services are only available to LIGA total! subscribers and accessible via the red button on the remote control.
