Download a program called memtest86 - it goes on a floppy and boots up from the disk, then tests your RAM to make sure all is well, i found it useful when one of my sticks stopped working

Also try cleaning with a brush the memory slot before the install.
And exchange the memories. Some systems need the bigger memory in the slot 0 and the smaller in the 1...

Personally, i would try the 1GB stick by itself, You dont mention what motherboard or bios date you have. There may be issues relating to the size of memory you install at the time you got the motherboard/pc. You may need a bios upgrade to recognise the 1GB stick. As mentioned earlier, if you make a 1 gig count in memory test (after using slot 0 for the 1 GB) try adding the second.

It is hard to imagine a program telling you your memory should be larger than it is, IF the bios has already determined its value.....
