Default newbie bband questions

ive just moved into a house that has the cabling all in place for n-tl and i was going to subscribe to their broadband package but then i noticed that its possible to mod a surfboard modem to get access to the net- can someone tell me what i need to do to access the internet at 10 gig- firstly do i need to have a minimum broadband connection with them? or can this be done without paying any sub? secondly are there any guides out there- im reasonably technically minded im just new this, cheers for any help on info!

I've just put the haynes Cable Modem guide on the gmail drive.

It's recommended to subscribe to a minimum package on cable as they could cut the feed at any time if you don't subscribe. You can buy pre-modded modems off auction sites, so all you would need is a valid mac address (modem electronic serial number). This mac would need to be from your franchise area, but not from your immediate area.

A modem has to talkback or you wouldn't be able to access the internet. They wouldn't be able to identify you as the user unless they sent someone out to your streetbox to check all the connections and that costs money that the cableco doesn't have.
