ProSiebenSat.1 tries pay-TV in France--Monday, 15 February 2010 19:49

German TV group ProSiebenSat.1 has commenced offering its international pay-TV channel ProSiebenSat.1 Welt to IPTV platform operators in France. French distribution agent Thema TV has been appointed the local representative to negotiate carriage deals.

After the USA and Canada, France is the third country in which the channel has become available. ProSiebenSat.1 sees large potential in France, saying that the German language has become increasingly popular amongst French students: 15% of high school students have opted to study the neighbouring country’s language. The TV group also points to the German-speaking minority in French region Alsace.

However, the situation is different than in North America: All of ProSiebenSat.1’s domestic German TV channels are available throughout Europe free-to-air via satellite. It therefore remains to be seen whether the target group will be prepared to sign up for a pay-TV service mainly showing programmes which can be seen on Sat.1, ProSieben, kabel eins and N24 without subscription fees.
