Default Father in need

I have 4 children and my eldest daughter ( 8 ) is showing a keen interest in various child based sites , As i work long hours and am often away for long periods of time i cannot monitor my daughters Internet usage.

My problem isn't the content shes viewing as of yet as she only knows site names they use at school and from tv adverts she see's .

Yesterday i noticed she had gone onto a site called mushimonsters.com , my wife had signed her up to make a monster and within minutes she received a friend request from someone in the US , upon looking around myself i could see what "other children " had written including personal information without even being a friend of theirs.

My question is : Is there any software i could use to block chat or even content / sites i deem to be inappropriate ??

Sorry if it sounds like i am a paranoid father , just would like to offer my children some degree of protection when i'm not around , you hear too much bad stuff going on.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

I think there is some software intended for a similar purpose, but I haven't looked into it, check out net nanny and cyber nanny, I'm sure other parents are equally concerned, as are probably the sites that she visits, try contacting them and see what they advise.

Even with the software I'd advise keeping a close eye on their activities, and any personal messages, from what I've read some of these children's sites are frequented by adults.

Hi,

Have a look at the comparison site below.

Internet Filter Software Review 2010 - TopTenREVIEWS

Not used any myself, but my daughter is just starting to use the PC (only with myself at the mo) but the speed she is picking it up, I will have to get something myself soon.

Looking at the differant ones, seems like Cybersitter is the best choice.

im told net nanny doesnt do the job like it used to. prob because of everyone running pirate copys so the updates/support have been lacking.

my gf's youngest got 'womens boobies' from searching for 'barbie'

if you find something which does the trick, let us know.

You can block specific sites with your router normally, I can on mine anyway. To be honest though, surely an 8 yr old should be 'supervised' on the internet anyway, my 9yr old son is.

Supervision isn't an issue , the computer is in a family space where everyone can see , just alittle surprised at what she could see.

mm, I know what you mean, I always ensure when they're using google that 'safe search' is on, otherwise, searching for almost anything innocent can bring up things an 8 or 9 yr old is too young to read or see.
