Default PayPal Scam Alert

Hey guys i just been through this myself and i nearly got ripped off so i thought i let u guys know so u dont go through the same thing
I was trying to sell something on gumtree and i got this email:

Hello thanks for your response, I'll be offering you 50 pounds for the postage cost via Royal Mail International Signed for to my partner who is on a training course in West Africa,i want to send it as a Birthday present...I would have loved to handle it myself but unfortunately I'm presently in Finland with my boss on a business trip, so I'll really appreciate your help. Send me a PayPal request of the total cost of the item plus the postage cost and I'll make the payment asap.

Hope to read from you soon

its definitely a scam for more info read this:

PayPal Scam Alert

One popular scamming method currently being used is where the scammer offers to pay the amount via PayPal. When the amount comes through to the seller, it is £0.00. The scammer then states that PayPal is holding the funds until you send the goods to the buyer. You may even receive emails from PayPal that look real, but they are actually fakes. Please forward any suspicious emails to PayPal.
How to avoid this scam:
• PayPal does not hold funds until an item is sent.
• Beware of fake PayPal emails – always check with PayPal if you are unsure.
• Always trade face to face when buying items on Gumtree.
Above all, go with your gut. If you don’t feel good about this transaction, just walk away.

hope it helps if anyone knew about this then i was just tryin to help out someone that didnt know like me
thanks

I myself nearly fell into this trap when selling a laptop in my local free ads edition , received a very official email after requesting such funds , i then rang pay pal to verify the email was authentic , turned out that they had no records of this transaction.

I keep getting phone calls claiming to be from Paypal, they immediately ask for date of Birth and Password for "Data Protection" - they get quite snotty when I refuse to give them any personal details for my Data Protection.
