Default Laser damaging discs

Hi all, totally new to this section & know nothing about them. I'm asking for my son.
He took a game into his local console shop to have the disc cleaned due to scratches. The guy behind the counter couldn't believe the xbox kept freezing as the scratches weren't that bad. He said it looks like the laser is on its way out. Since then all of his games are freezing. As we were leaving the shop the assistant said something about the 3 light rule and we could get a replacement xbox. Anyone know what he meant? Our xbox is over 12 months old and run out of warranty.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I had my frends drive hear yesterday, bourght a 360 faulty drive so i cleand it. It was dirty and not reading at all, but when cleand i keep getting disk error please contact microsft on good games even thow i had cleand lens and drive. So i just swapt the lens and it is running like new again. If the disks are good, test them on anover 360 see how they run, if you dont want to flash a drive you can look a replacing part like the lasser on the drive. That is if microsoft wont do any thing for you(ring them), some thing ellse could always go rong with it that they would have to repair!!
