I find just changing the HFC/USB mac address, and the last 3 digits on the S/n on a unmoded modem, using blackcat jtag, works best for me. Works every time, and stays on always.

Macs that work for me are in the range of -00:20:xx:xx:xx:xx - 00:40:xx:xx:xx:xx - 00:90:xx:xx:xx:xx and 1 or 2 others.

Hi daveshooter i wasnt aware you could change settings on an unmodded modem is that something thats unique to blackcat??? also what modem are you using a SB or a ambit?

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the bpi certs arnt screwed up like when a modems flashed with hax ect.

Hello bud, sorry I should of explained more, regarding how I set my modems.

I've only worked with sb4100, sb4200, and the 5100 range of modems, were I just change the 2 mac's and the last 4 numbers of the S/Number but not the firmware, using blackcat, and a home made jtag LPT lead.

After I solder the header in to a new unmodified modem, I then take a full 2 meg backup, because there is always the likely hood of the modem getting a firmware upgrade from the ISP, and locking you out next time you need to change mac settings in the non vol, so take a full 2meg backup of said modem and save the file safe somewhere with a name to link it to the modem.
Then you can flash it back again, ready to start over with a new mac and s/n if the worst happens.
I truly don't believe doing a firmware flash is worth it now days ,going on how VM are changing things. So keep the modem as close to factory default settings as you can, thats the key.

If you think about it, if your running a firmware hacked modem, it will show up on the system, because it doesn't pass the ISP network system tests carry-ed out on the LAN range 10.20.30.20 or something like that. Not the WAN side.

How It works is like your home or office PC's connecting to your home/office router, and in turn your router gives your PC a working IP address from the routers dhcp. Now the modem is the same as the PC, it also needs to connect to a ISP on the LAN (Home network) side to get the wan (Internet) side working.

So as I said we are all sitting on 1 big home network using an internal IP address, with an IP starting in the range of 10.xxx.xxx.xxx appointed to the second IP of our modems, this is the side the ISP's and some of the one's in the know how talk on , using things like telnet.

Also hacked firmware can be nasty, and leave open ports thats not nice, and allow others to route throw your LAN side passing your firewall, maybe because you have a LAN share on your network allowing open access to your computers. Well thats what Backtrack tells me,.

So a full backup, then just change 2 mac's and the last 4 on S/N, and allways change the mac on the unit your plugging in to the modem every time.

Regards..

Hi DS,

No problem man ive got this handy sb5100e-2.3.2.0-SCM03-FATSH.bin is that what your using??? I believe both the sb5100 and 5101e firmwares are interchangable arnt they. Whats the name for vm's SB firmware also you stated sometimes the modem updates how often does it do this and when it does do you just reflash with the same mac or does that blacklist after update?

thanx
