I've received my lead and booted my modem etc. I now need a MAC address...Any ideas where I can get one?

I'm in the Tyne and Wear area, South Tyneside close to Newcastle and Gateshead...My cable provider is TW

You need someone else in your franchise area but not on your UBR to swap MAC's with.

If you read the guides and the haynes manual, it's really quite straightforward. You need a mac address from the same franchise area but not the same leg of the network. There is a proggy called DHCP force that scans for mac addresses. You can either swap macs with someone else or get a friend (or 2) to run DHCP force and scan for some macs.

I think im getting the hang of it now but need a few things clearing up

I go the blackcat software up and running and its connecting to my modem. I've clicked on the sb5100 tab and when I press read it brings up the MAC address and ethernet addres installed. Is it just a process of simply changing the mac here and the pressing write. Will the install the new mac address I have put on. Hey presto?

Or is it more complicated than that.

Also, the mac address coming up is say 00:11:4S etc, where the one i got is 00-11- etc, do i change the colons to hyphens or leave them as they are and just replace the digits?

All help appreciated.

right

all read and im a little bit wiser now. My modem is already flashed from the previous owner, do i still need to do it again as instructed in the haynes manual.

Also, it only goes on about your mac address, it doesnt tell you where or how to add it to you modem, only how to flash it?

And the site where i get my UBR from, is not working. Just brings up a page saying refresh not available and blocked?

Any ideas, i think im getting very close to doing it!

If you can find your external IP address, do a whois search on that - use google to find some whois engines, most will return your UBR details.

You shouldn't have to re-flash the modem if already patched - have you tried it to see if it will go on-line as is?

I've never used blackcat, maybe better to ask at tcniso if you have any problems with that and let us know how you get on
