Default Re: My thoughts on the KV A780

Hi,

I would be grateful if someone could explain to me how I should connect my Kryptview A780 box.

I have cable installed in bothmy front and back room. Ideally I would like the box to be in the back room.

The cable modem is connected to a wired router which is connected to a PC in the front room. This provides the wireless for a PC in the back room. The router has 1 ethernet (blue port) and 4 lan (yellow ports).

The ethernet port is being used for the broadband, therefore I can't connect my box to it, I understand that I need to either get another router or home plugs.

If I get another router .....
Can it be not wired, does it run on batteries ?
If so, is the only connection I need to make, the router to the box ?
Is there a particular router I should get? does it require firmware (dd-wrt)?

If I get homeplugs ....
How many do I need ?
Where do they go and how are they connected ?

Any advice is much appreciated.

You don't connect the Kryptview to the PC in your back room. It's needs to be connected to the wireless router in your front room. This can be done with either a wi-fi bridge or homeplugs.

You would require two homeplugs, one plugged into a wall socket in your front room near your wireless router, the other one plugged into a wall socket close to your Kryptview in the back room. An ethernet cable needs to be connected to both homeplugs and into the wireless router and Kryptview respectively. If you are going to use homeplugs please ensure that the sockets to be used for the homeplugs in both rooms are on the same ring main (circuit), if not the wi-fi bridge would be advisable.

Thank you for your reply adyf.

To be able to connect a ethernet cable from my router, I would have to remove my broadband ethernet, would this not mean I would loose my internet connection ?

How do I know if the plugs are on the same circuit ?

What is a Wi-Fi bridge ?

Sorry for being so ignorant, thanks for your help.

No, does not run on batteries. If you get another router, you can turn it into a bridge!

Yes, DD-WRT is recommended if you purchase a compatible router

At least two

One near your router(in the LAN ports), and one near the KV

No, you would connect a cable from your LAN port to the homeplug/router/ straight to the receiver. They would just use your mains electricity to form a circuit.

A bridge is used to connect two devices that can't be connected otherwise. eg: if you connect a cable from one router to a switch, the cable becomes the bridge. A wi-fi or wireless bridge is a DD-WRT router/Dreambox bridge. A hardwired bridge would be homeplugs

You could also think of your networked devices as houses(somewhere in Italy where you're near the water)
To get from one house to another house, you can't just send data normally,or it would be lost in the water between your two houses. Instead you would have to use a bridge in between the houses, in order to pass data on. Think of wireless bridges as levetating bridges if you want

Thank you Waqasahmed, that's helped me a lot.

So I can keep my ethernet connection to my broadband.

One final question (hopefully) if I may, should I use an ethernet cable when connecting the Lan connection between the router and the box ?

Sorry, just ask one more question. If you choose to have 2 routers, do they need to be connected by a long cable ?

Try a set of home plugs if your router is far away from your box

Thanks Clio1

Don't the home plugs need to be connected together by a long cable?
