I have a D-Link DIR-615 router with DD-WRT firmware on and also a Netgear router with standard VM firmware, is it possible to bridge the two wirelessly?

yes you should be able to use the d-link with dd-wrt as a wireless bridge, I have a linksys wrt54gs set up this way.

No the other router dosent have to have dd-wrt, ive used my linksys with dd-wrt to connect to lots of different routers (some people in my area are still using wep) just for educational purposes, Ive connected it to d-link, netgear, netopia with out any problems.
