Question eurovox power proplem

hi my box had lost power all together about three weeks ago. Then after reading many forums and messing about with the connector ribbons inside i can get the standby light to come on.That is it, nothing else i had read about someone else with a similar problem and he got his working whith no sign of life by using dnupman and the reset button.I cannot get dnupman to find my eurovox so i cannot flash it.I am using a 9 pinned double female ended cable which looks the same as the null modem cables you get on ebay. Can anyone tell me if i am going in the right direction or barking totally up the wrong tree.
